"The Dirty Man"
by Julian Darius

Call no man
“dirty”
for not flushing the toilet
(though it’s full of shit
mingling distastefully around toilet paper)
nor for failure
to wash his hands afterward
(perhaps he is of a professorial disposition,
properly absent-minded of such trivial matters);
call no man
“crude”
when reading in the john
(there are worse things to break propriety for)
-- no,
call a man
“dirty”
when he places the book he reads
on the floor of the stall
even propped up against the stall’s corners.
